January Theme: Foundations For Change
Who will you choose to be?
My mentor has given me many beautiful nuggets to use in my professional career (I help adults with ADHD get their shit together so they can live their ideal life). One of those that resonates with me big time is “Who do you wanna be?”
I love that.
The idea that I can choose who I want to be is liberating.
I can choose to be cool with myself when I’m having a plan B day and my focus is crap. I can choose to say no to that alcohol because I know if I start drinking, I’ll keep drinking. I can choose to be patient and listen instead of react (that one is TOUGH!)
And so when it comes to setting myself up for January, I asked myself who I want to be in ADHD Big Brother land. In my reflection, I came up with:
I want to be a part of the solution. I want to be a person that keeps the eye on nudging forward. I want to be a voice of empathy without the “give up”.
I recognize that not everyone wants to be moving forward. Some people want a break, a breath, a reprieve from feeling like they have to achieve. That’s great! Breaks rule. We need time to recharge. That said, my job-job at ADHD Big Brother is solely to help adults with ADHD who want to be done with the break, are tired of feeling stagnant, and are passionate about change. They want to get their shit together. That’s my jam! That’s my passion and my souls purpose, to be dramatic about it. Think of me like the dentist of ADHD…you go to the dentist when you have a problem, or for routine maintenance, but you never go to the dentist and say “All you ever do is work on teeth…this is toxic dentistry! Can’t I just sit in the chair, for once, and just rinse out my mouth?”HA! No sir! I love this shit! I live in it, I swim in it…it juices me up, it doth not deplete me. Productivity for ADHDers is awesome….when it’s happening! And I can help make it happen. YAY!
This year, I’m choosing to be more thoughtful and purposeful about my approach. Theming the months seems like a fun, novel way to go. And so this month I think it’s fantastic to hit the big picture stuff! Wanna?
Who do you wanna be?
We have a member of the ADHD Big Brother Community who gave us all something really interesting to chat about. She asked us what our one word theme for the year is. It was a reference to Gretchen Ruben who is hugely popular and we should all go down the rabbit hole of her podcast and her website. I think that the one word theme concept is brilliant.
If we can remember it.
If we can remind ourselves that we have it.
If we externalize it and put it in front of our face.
Otherwise, it’s like everything else, we’ll come up with it because it’s a neat thing to do, and then it will last 24 hours if we are lucky.
So how about we do this:
Let’s take some time to sit and imagine ourselves 10 years from now, having accomplished everything we desired, living as our ideal self in our ideal life. Play. Fantasize. That shitty “this will never happen” asshole that lives in our head isn’t allowed to play. This is our ‘just for funsies’ time.
And as we sit in how awesome that would feel, let’s share our one word theme (Thanks, Gretchen Ruben!) with each other.
And then let’s sprinkle on our ADHD special sauce to take it a step further. What can we do to make sure we are on top of our one word theme and that it lives beyond a day?
And if you struggle with any of it, I invite you into my ADHD dentist chair. At ADHD Big Brother, we are the masters of accountability, externalizing, gamifying….we are THE ADHD community. Not-so-humble brag: we are a platinum award winning community on the Circle platform because our engagement is off the charts. Come check us out and you’ll see.
My word is “Consistency”
What’s yours?
