How To Get Unstuck
From your EvenThoughbi Kenobi
I experience pretty significant ADHD symptoms. I experience depression as well, and I am unmedicated for all off it. Oh, it’s slogtastic sometimes here inside my skull spaghetti!
I’m also an ADHD coach. Although I think I would be more aptly described as an productivity coach with ADHD-friendly strategies. I’m who you call when you know what you want to be doing, but you aren’t doing it. Education on being ADHD is pretty much out there and all over the place. I help people “do the work.”
One of those things is how to get unstuck.
I talk about getting unstuck in this week’s episode of ADHD Big Brother. Here’s the link to give it a listen.
You are going to find an unlimited supply of advice advocating for self-care, have a rest, take some you time, get a massage, go for a walk, burn some sage, eat a banana, pet your dog, high-five yourself, put on a record, draw a bath, take a bath… that’s lovely, and if you have time for that, do it! That’s step one.
But what if we don’t have that option. What if there’s some important stuff that has to happen today and we just aren’t able to get started. What if getting that massage is not a thing for us? What if we are having a craptastical day, and yet…
I’m here for the implementation. Do you need help doing, when doing is impossible?
I might be able to help.
I live in the space of “even though”.
Even though the world can be sucky. Even though I have no drive sometimes. Even though my focus is for shit. Even though all that…I’m going to take a step forward.
I’m the Obi Wan Kenobi of Even Though. I’m an EvenThoughbi Kenobi.
What does that look like in real life?
Great question. Do you know your goal? Your thing to do? Where you’d like to go/be?
Knowing where you want to get to, what might a step in that direction be?
Let’s shelve “right step” for now. What moves you kinda sorta maybe in the direction of what might be that goal?
Even though the step is going to be so tough, it’s going to feel massive, it’s going to be difficult to move, it’s going to be far less than what you know you are capable of. Even though all that, can you get started and take one step?
Movement is everything! Action first, then motivation. We have ADHD. We know the deal: motivation for a crappy task in the moment isn’t a thing.
Can you take one tiny, painful step, filled with the inner tantrum of that 3 year old that lives inside of you?
I have found that for certain things prepping for that step in advance can make success way more likely. For me it’s anything exercise related. I prep by setting out my socks and have my clothes either on when I go to sleep, or at the ready, and I set my phone on the dresser so that when the alarm goes off I have to get out of bed to turn it off. My first step after the alarm is to turn on lights and put on socks. This gets me started on going for my early morning walk. If any of those pieces are missing, I might just bail and go back to bed.
How can you set yourself up for a “more likely to be successful” scenario? What is your next step toward that thing you need/want to do? And when are you going to take that step?
And if you still find yourself unable to get started, I have a Ready S.E.T. Go method that I’ll send you for free. Click here for that. Be warned, though, it will sign you up for my ADHD Big Brother newsletter, so you’ll have that extra step to unsubscribe if you don’t want anything else. No biggie. I won’t be upset.
