Conquering Your Turd Mountain
One piece of shit task at a time
It’s easy to overlook a single dog turd in your backyard. You can walk around it. You know it’s there, but you’re going to set up the croquet course so you won’t have to accidentally step in it. It’s gonna be fine.
That’s how I view a shitty task that I don’t want to do. It needs to get done…at some point. But I can work around it, and I’m not up for dealing with shit right now.
Then the dog shits again.
And the dog shits again.
Now there are multiple “to dos” in your yard. And the effort to take care of them is starting to bring it’s own level of tension. Overwhelm enters the scene.
And eventually it becomes a Turd Mountain.
How on earth can we possibly deal with all these to dos?!
Not to mention the fact that some days when we actually scoop a couple of those turds, we notice that the dog got diarrhea and added more mess to the pile! Anxiety and dread are now on the scene.
This is the thing I’m working with my members to conquer in January and February.
I have found that there are 6 questions that need to be answered in order to effectively conquer your turd mountain.
Yes, it’s possible to clear your yard of turds. And it’s possible to have an effective way to manage those turds so they don’t get overwhelming. The dog (life) will always shit (create todos), but if you answer some questions, you can handle it!
Here’s all 6 of the questions you need to have proper answers for in order to have an ‘effective system’:
How do you capture your turds?
How do you decide which turd to shovel?
What is your calendar method for when you have appointments?
How do you remember what you are going to do?
How do you manage time in the moment because you and I both know that we suck at it?
How do you move forward in the moment when you have an inner tantrum about the turd?
If you have a proper answer for all 6 of these, then you have yourself a fully functioning “system” for managing your ADHD.
In my personal experience, I have found that dealing with these questions is best done in a setting where there can be a back and forth and feedback and insights can happen.
For instance, you might say “I capture my turds in my notes app. Whenever I have a good idea that I don’t want to forget, I open my notes app and put it in there.”
That sounds great, until the follow up question reveals that you have never gone back and reviewed your notes app.
Another example might be that you create an eisenhower matrix, or you have some brilliant way of capturing your turds and deciding which ones are the ones you will prioritize, but it’s going to take you 5 hours to do, and you are convinced that you are a person that needs to do a thing until it’s all the way done, because “that’s just who I am.” But perhaps you realize that your life is so busy that you never have a dedicated 5 hour chunk of time, nor do you WANT to dedicate 5 straight hours to a giant turd.
If you want help with your system, I’m holding workshops for members of ADHDBB throughout January. The individual workshops are maxed out at 7 members, so we can all really dig into each other’s answers.
We also have a dedicated space in the community to discuss our systems, as well as the most engaged and active daily accountability in the world! That’s my personal opinion, but I challenge you to experience it and tell me otherwise! Worst thing that happens is you get amazing accountability and get shit done on a quest to prove me wrong! Go for it!
I will also be sharing how I, personally, answer all these questions in the workshop.
This isn’t about which system is the best one for adults with ADHD. They all work, and they are all good. It’s about how do YOU answer these questions to ensure that whatever system you are using is setting you up to be the most effective.
It feels good to see that turd mountain turn into just a few remaining turds.
So…can you answer all 6 of those questions confidently? If not, come to the workshops! Get in before they fill up. Half the slots are already scooped up as of the time of writing this. GEEEEET ON IT! Here’s the link.
