An Appeal For ADHD Coaching
Because we still aren't doing the work
ADHD is such a tricky little disorder, because asking for help feels really weird. I’m gonna ask someone for help because I can’t seem to update my resume? Why? Because I know how to update my resume…they are just gonna tell me “just do it…update your resume”… and I know how to update my resume! What am I, an idiot?
How humiliating it can be to ask for help on something you already have the answer for.
I can’t seem to do my laundry.
But do you know how to do the laundry?
Yes.
So do your laundry!
I remember feeling like such a piece of shit that I wasn’t doing a thing that I knew how to do. It feels so stupid to say “I can’t do it”, when phsyically, technically, I can! So it’s technically a lie, and yet it’s the truth! What the hell?!
And so we seek these answers. Answers are free! That’s so wonderful. Every single answer to our ADHD struggle is out there for the taking. Or it’s affordable in book form. Have you guys binged all Jessica McCabe’s awesome Youtube videos? They’re awesome! Did you get her book? Did you buy 100 other books? I did! Did you have epiphanies all the way through all those books? Same here!
We are not short on answers.
What we are short on is attention span, memory, that thing where we actually put a thing into practice!
I’m not so naive as to think that any of you who read this do anything more than go “oh that’s a good idea I am gonna try that…” or if it’s really resonating, “I feel so called out right now!”
And then what?
If you are anything like I used to be, then you have that awesome aha moment, and then you get right back to your life. On to the next Substack article. On to the next podcast. On to the next youtube video. And through no fault of our own, the aha moment is gone to the void forever. And our life continues as it was.
What to do?
Bring in other people. Hire an ADHD coach. Join a community. Get your friends involved for accountability. Take some of the heavy lifting off your shoulders, allow yourself to be vulnerable to admit a hard truth…that you “can’t” right now, even though you technically can.
Here’s my appeal for an ADHD coach:
They can be your thought partner to help you discover your unique way of doing a thing, even though you are screaming “can’t” on the inside.
They have an arsenal of tools, behavior modifications, ideas, and better than all that…they have the questions to ask to get you to come up with your unique tool, behavior modification, idea.
They can be that extra external accountability that keeps you moving forward because right now you don’t care about holding yourself accountable.
The mental ROI for hiring a coach is invaluable. If you have a budget for your self improvement, and you are struggling with your ADHD, give yourself the gift of an ADHD coach for about 3 months. that’s how long it takes to really seal the deal on some new skills. Some people do it faster, some take longer. But man, it’s worth it.
I also practice what I preach. I’m not just a coach, I have hired ADHD coaches, therapists, a business coach, a health coach, I’ve had mentors, and I’m immersed in my ADHDBB community for that extra accountability. When I have additional coach money, I use it!
Get the skills. Practice them. Don’t just read about them.
If you are a person who is ready to do the work and make change, let’s jump on a call and you can tell me all about it. We’ll see if I’m a good fit as your coach. Head over to ADHD Big Brother, and book a time on my calendar
NO coach money at the moment? Here’s my challenge to you:
The next time you read or hear something profound, and you say “I’m gonna try that!” I want you to stop everything you are doing. Create an appointment right then and there on your calendar app when you are going to implement that idea. And set a reminder as well. Don’t let that idea go anywhere. Keep it on a lasso, so you actually have permission to forget.

Don’t you just want to hug your brain sometimes?
